18-year-old tried to kill pregnant woman because he didn’t want to be a dad

An 18-year-old Silver Spring man used a kitchen knife to repeatedly stab a pregnant woman in a wooded area of Montgomery County because he didn’t want to be a father, according to court documents filed Thursday.

The suspect, Dakota Brothers, tried to kill the 19-year-old and their unborn girl on Wednesday afternoon, according to the documents.

The woman had been six months pregnant. She was taken to a hospital and underwent surgery. During the procedure, the baby’s heart rate was lost and an emergency caesarian section was preformed, according to the court records. CPR was performed on the infant, and she was placed in the neonatal intensive care unit, according to the court records.

“The infant is in NICU, and her fate is uncertain at this time,” a Montgomery detective wrote in an affidavit, signed by a Montgomery County court commissioner at 2:10 a.m. Thursday.

The mother of the child was listed in critical condition on Thursday, according to authorities.

Brothers was caught Wednesday shortly after the incident. He was charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder and one count of first-degree assault in connection with the 19-year-old. It is unclear what charges, if any, would be filed in connection with the alleged attack on the unborn baby.

Brothers is being held in the county jail without bond. He is due in court at 1 p.m., according to police officials. It is unclear from court records if he has been assigned an attorney.
